DO-178B DER & Certification


DO-178B & DO-254 Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs), are necessary for almost all commercial and military avionics. The top 20 largest aerospace companies have their own avionics DERs. The other 500 typically “rent” an avionics software, systems, or hardware DER on an as-needed basis. The average project requires 400-600 hours of such total DER time. There are 100-150 independent avionics software/systems DERs available and working in the U.S. Most are solo independents and either fully engaged or looking for work. The DO-178B Industry Group regularly screens, tests, and refers only what we believe are the top 10 such DO178B & DO254 DERs in Software and Systems.
Our referred DERs charge between $100 - $160/hr and are not allowed to charge more (there should never be a need to pay more than this). When selecting a DER, check for years experience, guarantees from the DERs representative company/agency, availability, and experience on similar programs to yours.
DO-178B and DO-254 DERs: if you want to be considered for referrals by the DO-178B Industry Group, you’ll need to set up an appointment with the DO-178B Industry Group approved lead DERs and also be audited/tested by an independent DER rating service such as Atego HighRely (www.atego.com).
